LPSO Conducts Active Threat Drill

Thursday, July 29, 2021

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO), in collaboration with the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS), conducted an active threat drill for LPSS administrators on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

L. J. Alleman Fine Arts Magnet Academy served as the staging site, where more than 100 school administrators received active threat training from LPSO’s Training Unit prior to the drill. Administrators with the Lafayette Parish School Resource Officer Unit, SWAT team members, and Sheriff’s deputies were also on hand to help simulate the scenario and law enforcement’s response to an active threat.

Following a morning of training, the administrators were put to the test with a drill. Overall, their response was in line with the training deputies had instilled in the school leaders. LPSS personnel acted quickly, prioritized the safety of everyone in the facility, and executed what could be life-saving measures for themselves and their students in the event of a legitimate active threat on campus.

Both the Sheriff’s Office and LPSS are committed to the continuous training and evolution of best practices necessary to ensure the safety and security of every student and staff member in schools across Lafayette Parish.
