THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOSTS FAIR AND IMPARTIAL POLICE TRA

Thursday, August 25, 2016

Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber and the command staff of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office attended a two day training session at the Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex and Training Center.  Sheriff Garber also invited parish and community leaders along with some members of our local print media. Those in attendance with the Sheriff’s Office command staff included Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Joel Robideaux, Lafayette Parish Chief Financial Officer Lowell Duhon, Interim Lafayette Police Chief Reginald Thomas, Father Chester Arceneaux, a NAACP Local Chapter Representative, NAACP Chapter Leader John Milton, ULL Criminal Justice Department Head David Khey, Pastor Carl Sonnier, Seth Dickerson, Lainie Cook and Christiaan Mader.   The  two day training session is being delivered by Chief Scott Cunningham who is a nationally recognized trainer and published expert on the subject.

The evidence and science based training addresses the multitude of biases that impact the perceptions and behavior of well-intentioned people including, law enforcement officials, government officials, members of the media and the general public.  The “fair & impartial policing perspective” reflects a new way of thinking about the issue of biased policing and is based on the science of bias.  It also helps bring down barriers between community stakeholders as it increases bias education and encourages effective communication within the community.
