CIVIL PROCESSING

The Civil department is responsible for processing criminal subpoenas, civil subpoenas, handles all functions related to sales and seizures of property in the parish, and works with employers to administer garnishments ordered by the courts.

Location

The Civil Division includes service of civil litigation and criminal process. The civil litigation area is divided into 3 areas: process service, seizure and sale, and garnishments. The criminal process area handles service in criminal, traffic, family court, and juvenile matters.

A key area of responsibility for the Civil Division is seizure and sale of property. Civil sales of both movable and immovable property occur every Wednesday morning (excluding holidays) at 10:00 A.M. The sales are located on the 2nd floor of the Lafayette Parish Consolidated Government Building at 1010 Lafayette St. across from the Parish Courthouse.

COVID-19 Operational Procedures Update
Due to COVID-19, Sheriff Sales will include the implementation of the appropriate social distancing and precautions.

Bidding is open to all persons and payment must be made by 2 P.M. on the day of the sale. Only certified funds will be accepted.

The Civil Department seizes movable and immovable property under the direction of the 15th Judicial District Court. A hold harmless agreement is required to be completed and returned to our office in those cases in which movable property is to be moved, towed, or stored. The Civil Department requests that any attorney requesting cancellation of a sale to please contact our office at 337-236-5820 or via email at LPSO Civil.

Specific information pertaining to Civil sales may also be found in the legal section of the official journal of Lafayette Parish (The Advertiser) 10 days prior to each sale for movable properties and 30 days prior for immovable properties. The advertisements are also published on Thursdays, prior to each sale.

In addition to the newspaper posting, the public may also subscribe to receive a weekly email notice and or link directly to Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Sale site to view detailed information regarding property to be sold during the weekly sale. In order to do so, visit the link below.
