Lafayette Parish Correctional Center earns reaccreditation

The Lafayette Parish Correctional Center (LPCC), under the direction of Sheriff Mark Garber and Warden Paula Smith, was recently awarded reaccreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

To qualify for accreditation, LPCC practices and policies were required to be in compliance with 100 percent of ACA mandatory standards and at least 90 percent of ACA non-mandatory expected practices. Overall, LPCC was found to be in compliance with 100 percent of mandatory standards and 98.3 percent of the non-mandatory expected practices ACA evaluated.

The LPCC has been accredited since 1988, and is one of 150 correctional facilities nationwide which are currently ACA accredited.

“This is a very proud moment for the men and women in Corrections to be able to excel under the conditions they are enduring during the current health crises. Not only are we battling to maintain our standards and meet protocols, but under strict health guidelines, we are managing to keep the staff safe and healthy as well as our inmate population,” said Warden Smith, “Being reaccredited during a pandemic just proves that we are holding ourselves to a higher standard of care and practices, and we are excelling at it. I am extremely proud of our staff and our Sheriff’s Office for achieving this award.”

In addition to the ACA, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and currently holds a triple crown in accreditation.

The ACA accreditation award is valid for a period of three years.
